WHC were appointed to construct a full size polo field, stick and ball play area, synthetic exercise track and practice arena, and irrigation reservoir. The project included extensive earthworks, drainage, fencing and associated external works.
Company-owned laser grading LGP bulldozers, excavators and rear tipping dump trucks were utilised to redistribute in excess of 69,000 cubic metres of subsoil to create the sub-formation. Precise excavation and safe methods of working was paramount as a National Grid gas main ran the length of the main polo field.
This was followed by the installation of 13,000 metres of pipe drainage and almost 900 metres of irrigation pipework to the sub-base, using specialist Mastenbroek sportsfield trenchers and Househam backfilling hoppers.
After the topsoil was spread, intensive stone removal was carried out followed by 5,000 tonnes of sand amelioration of the topsoil, which was then laser graded to close tolerances. The area was seeded and White Horse carried out subsequent grow in operations to ensure successful sward establishment and development.
The lake was re-designed and constructed incorporating a fully automatic irrigation system.
WHC also constructed a 3,600 m2 exercise track and arena around the perimeter of the stick and ball practice field. The track construction incorporated an extensive drainage system, clean aggregate subbase, porous macadam and a specialist wax coated surface. special
The project was unique in that the main field was sown with 100% smooth stalk meadow grass, consisting of 3 different cultivars; arguably creating the best playing characteristics for polo. Not only that, rubber crumb was incorporated into the topsoil on the stick and ball field to help achieve a kinder surface on which to train.
